A Quote from the Dr.

"History teaches us that what seems sensible in one era, becomes barbaric in another. It is so difficult for me to see the practicality of the open method today. This is why I devote 100% of my practice to laparoscopic general surgery. My credo is 'use finesse'."

Happy Holidays!

What is there about the holidays that can bring out the best – and worst- in all of us?  It seems like our regular dose of stress is compounded ten-fold in anticipation of the “holiday season”.  I talk to so many people who tell me they know they need to lose weight and get healthy but they are going to wait until “the holidays” are over.  Folks…the “holidays” are one day.  Christmas.  Okay and maybe New Year’s if you call that a holiday.  It’s not an entire month.

Your body doesn’t simply ignore all those excess calories, sugar, fat and alcohol because…hey it’s “the holidays”!  It continues to have to process it all and get unhealthier.

If you choose to indulge in foods you don’t normally eat throughout the year, do so mindfully.  Don’t simply give yourself permission to go overboard and tell yourself you will get back on the wagon after the New Year.  That’s the old way of thinking, and it’s dangerous to your health.

Instead, make a plan and stick to it.  Take back control over your actions.  If you decide you are going to have a drink or two and a dessert at your company Christmas party, have it.  But do it mindfully.  Savor it.  Eat and drink slowly.  And don’t have more than the amount you decided on ahead of time.  And the next day, get back on your normal eating regime.

Make a plan for your holiday season.  It’s not about completely depriving yourself to the point where it is impossible to ignore.  Instead, it’s about making a reasonable plan that gives you some latitude but doesn’t make you feel out of control.  When you’re not at a party or social function, eat your small, low-fat meals.  Make sure you get some exercise into your day even if it’s just getting outside for a short walk.  That will allow your body to burn off some of the excess food and stress and keep you feeling connected to your healthy plan.

Did I happen to mention – allow youself to be happy.  It is the holiday season, and you have made a commitment to yourself to lose your weight and get healthy.  That is something to be joyful about.

Have a wonderful holiday!
