What is appendicitis?
Inflammation of the appendix was recognized as a disease in the sixteenth century. The appendix may become inflamed and filled with infection - a condition known as appendicitis.

Symptoms
Appendicitis is accompanied by:

  • tenderness or pain in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen.
  • feeling of tiredness, almost flu-like.
  • can cause nausea and vomiting.
  • temperature of 100 degrees or higher.

If think you are showing any of these symptoms, you may want to consult with a physician. If you would like to schedule an appointment with Dr. McKernan, please feel free to contact us.

What if I need surgery?

Today, appendectomy accounts for one percent of all surgical procedures in the United States with an incidence approaching 500,000 per year. Kurt Semm, a German gynecologist, performed the first laparoscopic appendectomy in 1983. Since the advent of laparoscopic approach in general surgery, appendicitis can be quickly treated using the minimally invasive technique.
