A Quote from the Dr.

"History teaches us that what seems sensible in one era, becomes barbaric in another. It is so difficult for me to see the practicality of the open method today. This is why I devote 100% of my practice to laparoscopic general surgery. My credo is 'use finesse'."

Most people dislike keeping food diaries but they are the best tools to keep oneself in check and to identify what works for you. Slimfast.com and Weightwatchers.com each have a free food log that calculates calories and nutrients. Five minutes a day can help keep the weight away. In addition to keeping a food diary, complete your "to-do" list every day.

To-Do List.

•  Take Supplements to ensure adequate nutrition.

•  Multivitamins daily: 1 adult or 2 children's chewable.

•  Calcium- chewable Tums/day for osteoporosis prevention: 2 (for men) 4 (for women).

•  B-12 supplements for those with malabsorptive procedures. (1 tablet under tongue daily or 1 shot monthly arranged with your physician).

•  Drink 6 cups caffeine-free, low to no calorie liquids, per day.

•  Drink liquids between meals not with meals.

•  Eat 3-5 small meals daily.

•  Limit refined sugar-concentrated foods, high calorie, and processed foods.

•  Avoid soft foods like ice cream and carbonated beverages.

•  Choose foods that are of high nutritional value and taste good to you.

•  Don't eat just to eat.

• Enjoy every bite (rule of thumb: try to chew 15 times per bite).

If you need additional help, bring your food diary to the next Support Group meeting. It will be on TUESDAY, June 6, 2005 at 6:30 pm . Meetings are held at 2001 Professional Pkwy , Suite110 (Dr. McKernan's office) , Woodstock . Please call the office if you need additional information.
